Setting up

The setup wizard

The step-by-step screen that gets a new music school website ready: instruments, tutors, lessons and prices, opening days, online booking, and the starter design, pages, sample content and photos.

On this page

The setup wizard is a short series of screens that asks for what your music school website needs before students can book: your school's name, how people reach you, the instruments you teach, your tutors and their hours, your lessons and prices, when you're open and how online booking works. At the end it can start the website in the Amp design, add a full set of ready-made pages, a main menu, sample photos and sample content, so you start from a finished-looking website instead of blank pages.

It takes about five minutes. Everything you type can be changed later, and nothing you skip is lost.

This page covers the Music kit's wizard step by step. For the wizard in general (how the steps, Back and Skip for now work), see The setup wizard in the shared chapters. Features marked (Pro) need a Pro or Agency licence.

When the wizard opens

The wizard opens by itself the first time you sign in to WordPress after you switch on the Music kit plugin (a plugin is an add-on for WordPress) and the Music theme. See Installing.

Until you finish it, a reminder appears at the top of the Dashboard, the Plugins and Themes screens and the Music school screen. Click Continue setup to go back to where you left off.

The WordPress Dashboard with a blue reminder at the top: "Finish setting up your website. A few questions and it's ready." and a Continue setup button

How to run the setup wizard again

  1. Go to Music school → Settings.
  2. Click Run setup again at the top right.
The top of the Music school settings screen, showing Riverside Music School and a Run setup again button on the right

Running it again is safe. It never adds an instrument, tutor or lesson type twice, the starter content step never makes copies, and pages you have edited are left alone. The design choice is only offered on a new website, so running the wizard again never changes your design.

The steps

The bar at the top shows all ten steps. A green tick means the step is saved. You can click any step's name to jump to it.

Step 1: Welcome

The first screen lists the steps ahead and reminds you that everything is also under Music school → Settings.

  1. Read the list. It is numbered the same way as the steps in the bar at the top.
  2. Click Let's start.
Step 1 of 10, Welcome: "Let's get your website ready. It takes about five minutes" with the numbered list of the steps ahead and a Let's start button

Step 2: Your school

Your school's name and logo appear on the website, in emails and on the staff sign-in page.

  1. In Trading name, type the name students know you by, for example "Riverside Music School". It is also used as the website's title.

  2. In Registered company name (optional), type your company's name as registered. Leave it blank to use the trading name.

  3. In Tagline (optional), type a short line about your school. It shows in the footer and in search results.

  4. Under the boxes, click Choose image. The media library opens.

  5. Click Upload files and choose your logo from your computer (or pick one you've already uploaded in Media Library), then click Use this image.

The media library opened from the wizard, titled "Choose: Logo", with the uploaded sample logo selected, its Attachment details on the right and a Use this image button at the bottom right
  6. The logo now shows in the box, with Change image and Remove next to it. You can also leave it and add it later.

  7. Click Save and continue.

Step 2 of 10, Your school, filled in with Riverside Music School, Riverside Music Ltd and the tagline Lessons for every age and stage, and the sample logo in the logo box with Change image and Remove next to it

Step 3: How people reach you

These details show in the website's header, footer and contact sections.

  1. In Phone numbers, type your numbers, one per line, the main number first.
  2. In WhatsApp number (optional), type a number only if it is on WhatsApp, in international format (for example +447700900123). Leave it blank to hide the WhatsApp buttons.
  3. In Public email, type the address students and parents should see.
  4. In Address, type the school's address. Line breaks are kept.
  5. In Send notifications to, type the address that should get new lesson requests, cancellations and contact form messages. For several people, put commas between the addresses.
  6. Click Save and continue.
Step 3 of 10, How people reach you, with a phone number, hello@example.com, the address 12 Mill Lane, Westfield, and the Send notifications to box

Step 4: Instruments

Visitors choose an instrument first when they book, and each tutor is linked to the instruments they teach.

  1. Tick what you teach: Piano, Keyboard, Guitar, Bass guitar, Ukulele, Violin, Cello, Drums, Singing, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet and Music theory. Nothing is ticked to begin with.
  2. In Anything else you teach (optional), type any instrument that isn't listed, one per line, for example "Harp".
  3. Click Save and continue.
Step 4 of 10, Instruments: fourteen instruments with Piano, Guitar, Violin and Singing ticked, and an empty Anything else you teach box

You must tick at least one instrument, or the wizard asks you to before it moves on. Instruments you've already added show "(added)".

Step 5: Tutors

Tell the wizard who teaches, what, and when. There is room for three tutors here; add more later.

For each tutor:

  1. Type their Name.
  2. In Email (optional), type their email address. It is used for news of their lessons and is never shown on the website.
  3. Under Teaches, tick the instruments they teach (from step 4).
  4. Under Teaching days, tick the days they teach (Monday to Friday start ticked).
  5. Set From and Until (they start at 15:30 and 19:30).
  6. Tick Give them a sign-in to see their own lessons if they should have their own account. This gives them the Tutor role; they set their password with "Lost your password?" on the sign-in page. It needs an email address.

Leave a tutor's Name empty to skip that box. Then click Save and continue.

Step 5 of 10, Tutors: Tutor 1 Anna Example teaching Piano and Singing, Tutor 2 Ben Example teaching Guitar and Violin, both Monday to Friday 15:30 to 19:30, and an empty Tutor 3

Add photos, a profile, more hours and days off later under Music school → Tutors.

Step 7: Opening days

Lessons are only offered inside these hours (and each tutor's own hours).

  1. For each day, the Open switch says whether the school is open. Switch it off for a closed day.
  2. Set the opening and closing times. The wizard starts with Monday to Thursday 15:00 to 20:00, Friday 15:00 to 19:00, Saturday 9:00 to 15:00 and Sunday closed.
  3. In Days the school is closed (optional), type one date per line, then a note, for example "2026-12-24 Christmas break". No lessons can be booked on those days.
  4. Click Save and continue.

Step 8: Online booking

These settings are also under Music school → Settings → Lessons.

  1. Take lesson bookings online starts on. Off: the booking form says to contact you instead.
  2. Instant confirmation: confirm online bookings straight away starts off. Off (recommended): each online booking is a request; the office confirms or declines it under Music school → Lessons, and the time is held meanwhile. On: bookings are confirmed at once, and the student gets the confirmation email and calendar invite straight away.
  3. One trial lesson per person starts on: a trial lesson can be booked once per email address.
  4. Notice needed (hours): how soon someone can book (it starts at 48, so nothing sooner than two days away).
  5. Book up to (weeks ahead): how far ahead people can book (it starts at 8).
  6. Offer start times every (minutes): 30 offers 4:00, 4:30, 5:00 and so on.
  7. Click Save and continue.
Step 8 of 10, Online booking: Take lesson bookings online on, Instant confirmation off, One trial lesson per person on, notice 48 hours, 8 weeks ahead and start times every 30 minutes

Step 9: Starter content

This is where the wizard builds your website. Each switch adds one kind of ready-made content. Switch on the ones you want, then click Save and continue. Running this step again never makes copies.

Step 9 of 10, Starter content, with switches for Start in the Amp design, Sample photos, Starter pages and menu, Practice tools page (Pro), Sample content and Legal pages (drafts)
SwitchStartsWhat it adds
Start in the Amp designOnAmp: near-black with one bright colour, big bold type, instrument cards, band places and free slots this week. Untick to keep Classic. You can switch to Recital, Little Notes, Classic or another design (and a colour palette) at any time under Site Settings → Design & colours. Only offered on a new website.
Sample photosOff49 stock photos of piano, guitar, violin, cello, drums, brass, singing and band lessons, recitals and concert halls, sheet music, a teaching studio and toy instruments for children's classes, from Pexels (free to use). They go into the media library, onto the starter pages, a sample gallery album and the sample events, and onto a Photo credits page that names each photographer.
Starter pages and menuOnHome, Lessons and prices, Book a lesson, About us, Contact, FAQ and a News page, with the main menu (including Tutors, Events, Gallery and Resources). Home is set as the front page. Pages you already have are left alone.
Practice tools page (Pro)On with ProA "Practice tools" page with the instrument tuner and the metronome, for students practising at home. Add it to your menu when you're ready. Without Pro, visitors don't see the tools.
Sample contentOffA few example FAQs, testimonials, two upcoming events and a practice resource, so the pages don't look empty while you add your own.
Legal pages (drafts)OnTerms and conditions, a privacy policy and a cookie policy, filled in with your details and saved as drafts for you to check before publishing. Add the law that applies under Music school → Settings → Privacy first.

While the starter content is added

When you click Save and continue, a box appears under the switches: Adding your starter content… Please keep this page open. Each part you switched on gets a line that says working… and then done. The sample photos are added a few at a time, so their line counts up, for example Sample photos: 17 of 49.

Step 9 of 10, Starter content while it works: the switches and buttons greyed out, and under them the box "Adding your starter content… Please keep this page open." with the lines Start in the Amp design: done and Sample photos: 17 of 49

Keep the page open. It takes a minute or two, mostly for the photos. When everything is done, the next step opens by itself. If the box turns red and says This didn't finish, click Save and continue again: the wizard carries on where it stopped and never adds anything twice.

Step 10: All done

The last screen lists what this run of the wizard did (anything an earlier run added isn't listed again), then gives you four links: See the website, Open Music school → Today, Review all settings and Add staff and choose what they can do.

Step 10 of 10, All done: Added 4 instruments, Added 2 tutors, Added 4 lesson types, Your website starts in the Amp design (Site Settings → Design & colours), Added 49 sample photos to the media library, Added a sample gallery album, Added the Photo credits page, Added 7 pages, Added the main menu, Added the Practice tools page (tuner and metronome), Added 11 sample items (marked as samples), Drafted your legal pages (Terms and conditions, Privacy policy, Cookie policy), followed by four links

Click Finish. The wizard closes and you land on Music school → Today.

The Music school Today screen straight after the wizard, with Lessons today, Lesson requests to confirm, New enquiries, and Coming up showing the two sample events

What you have at the end

With every switch on, the wizard leaves you with:

  • Your instruments, tutors and lesson types from steps 4 to 6.
  • Design: Amp.
  • Pages: Home (the front page), Lessons and prices, Book a lesson, About us, Contact, FAQ, News, Practice tools and Photo credits, all published. Terms and conditions, Privacy Policy and Cookie policy are drafts.
  • Main menu: Home, Lessons, Tutors, Events, a Discover list (Gallery, Resources, News, About us, FAQ) and Contact, with Book a lesson and Call us buttons.
  • Sample content:
    • five FAQs: What age can my child start?, Do I need my own instrument?, Can I take graded exams?, How much should we practise? and What if we need to cancel?
    • three testimonials, from "Alex", "Jordan" and "Priya"
    • two events: Summer student concert, and Open day: try an instrument
    • a practice resource: Ten-minute practice plan
    • a gallery album: "Concerts and lessons (sample photos)"
  • Photos: 49 sample photos in the media library, listed with their photographers on the Photo credits page.
The Pages list after the wizard, with Home marked Front Page, the starter pages, Practice tools and Photo credits, and the legal pages as drafts

This is the home page a visitor sees straight after the wizard, in the Amp design:

The new Riverside Music School home page in the Amp design: a near-black page with the headline "Start a band. Get loud.", Book a taster and Join a band buttons, a large photo of a singer, then instrument cards for Guitar, Piano, Singing and Violin with each tutor and the lesson prices from Free to £34

How to remove the sample content

There's no single "remove samples" button. The sample items don't say "Sample" in their titles, so use the list above to find them.

  1. Go to FAQs (in the main WordPress menu) and move the five sample questions to the Trash (tick them, choose Move to Trash from Bulk actions and click Apply).
  2. Do the same under Testimonials (Alex, Jordan, Priya), Events (the two sample events), Resources (Ten-minute practice plan) and Gallery (the album "Concerts and lessons (sample photos)").

To remove the sample photos, put your own photos on the pages first, then go to Media, search for "Pexels", select the sample photos and delete them permanently. Then update the Photo credits page.
