Setting up
The setup wizard
The step-by-step screen that gets a new driving school website ready: the areas you cover, your instructors, lessons and prices, hours, online booking, and the starter pages, theory resources, samples and photos.
On this page
The setup wizard is a short series of screens that asks for what your driving school website needs before learners can book: your school's name, how people reach you, the areas you pick up from, your instructors, your lessons and prices, when you take lessons and how online booking works. At the end it can add a full set of ready-made pages, a main menu, theory test resources, sample photos and sample content, so you start from a finished-looking website instead of blank pages.
It takes about five minutes. Everything you type can be changed later, and nothing you skip is lost.
This page covers the Driving kit's wizard step by step. For the wizard in general (how the steps, Back and Skip for now work), see The setup wizard in the shared chapters. Features marked (Pro) need a Pro or Agency licence.
When the wizard opens
The wizard opens by itself the first time you sign in to WordPress after you switch on the Driving kit plugin (a plugin is an add-on for WordPress) and the Driving theme. See Installing.
Until you finish it, a reminder appears at the top of the Dashboard, the Plugins and Themes screens and the Driving school screen. Click Continue setup to go back to where you left off.

How to run the setup wizard again
- Go to Driving school → Settings.
- Click Run setup again at the top right.

Running it again is safe. It never adds an area, instructor or lesson type with the same name twice, the starter content step never makes copies, and pages you have edited are left alone.
The steps
The bar at the top shows all ten steps. A green tick means the step is saved. You can click any step's name to jump to it.
Step 1: Welcome
The first screen lists the steps ahead and reminds you that everything is also under Driving school → Settings.
- Read the list. It is numbered the same way as the steps in the bar at the top.
- Click Let's start.

Step 2: Your school
Your school's name (or your own, if you teach alone) and logo appear on the website, in emails and on the staff sign-in page.
-
In Trading name, type the name learners know you by, for example "Clear Road Driving School". It is also used as the website's title.
-
In Registered company name (optional), type your company's name as registered. Leave it blank to use the trading name.
-
In Tagline (optional), type a short line about your lessons. It shows under the name in the header, in the footer and in search results.
-
Under the boxes, click Choose image. The media library opens.
-
Click Upload files and choose your logo from your computer (or pick one you've already uploaded in Media Library), then click Use this image.

-
The logo now shows in the box, with Change image and Remove next to it. You can also leave it and add it later.
-
Click Save and continue.

Step 3: How people reach you
These details show in the website's header, footer and contact sections.
- In Phone numbers, type your numbers, one per line, the main number first.
- In WhatsApp number (optional), type a number only if it is on WhatsApp, in international format (for example +447700900123). Leave it blank to hide the WhatsApp buttons.
- In Public email, type the address learners should see.
- In Address, type your address. Line breaks are kept.
- In Send notifications to, type the address that should get new bookings, cancellations, enquiries and contact form messages. For several people, put commas between the addresses.
- Click Save and continue.

Step 4: Areas you cover
These are the towns or districts your instructors pick learners up from. Online booking checks the learner's pickup postcode against them.
- In Areas (one per line: the name, a colon, its postcode districts), type each area on its own line, for example:
- Westfield: WF1, WF2
- Eastbrook: WF5
- Northby: WF7, WF8
- Click Save and continue.

Each line becomes an area under Driving school → Areas covered, where you can add more later.
Step 5: Your instructors
Tell the wizard who teaches, in what, where and when. Each instructor gets their own diary. There is room for three instructors here; add more later.
For each instructor:
- Type their Name.
- In Email (optional), type their email address. It is used for news of their lessons and is never shown on the website.
- In Teaches in, choose Manual, Automatic or Manual and automatic.
- Under Areas they cover, tick the areas from step 4 they pick up from (all start ticked).
- Under Teaching days, tick the days they teach (Monday to Friday start ticked).
- Set From and Until (they start at 08:00 and 18:00).
- Tick Give them a sign-in to see their own diary and keep their profile up to date if they should have their own account. This gives them the Instructor role; they set their password with "Lost your password?" on the sign-in page. It needs an email address.
Leave an instructor's Name empty to skip that box. Then click Save and continue.

Add photos, the car and days away later under Driving school → Instructors.
Step 6: Lessons and prices
The wizard starts you with four lessons, each with a manual and an automatic price.
| Lesson | Minutes | Manual | Automatic |
|---|---|---|---|
| First lesson | 60 | 0 (free) | 0 (free) |
| 1-hour lesson | 60 | 38 | 41 |
| 1.5-hour lesson | 90 | 56 | 60 |
| 2-hour lesson | 120 | 74 | 80 |
- Untick Offer this for any lesson you don't offer.
- Change the Minutes, Price (manual) and Price (automatic) to your own. Leave the first lesson at 0 for a free first lesson.
- Leave Show prices on the website on to show prices. Off: visitors see "Price on request".
- Click Save and continue.

Change them, or add more, under Driving school → Lesson types. Block bookings and courses are under Driving school → Packages (Pro).
Step 7: Opening hours
Lessons are only offered inside these hours (and each instructor's own hours).
- For each day, the Open switch says whether you take lessons. Switch it off for a day you don't.
- Set the start and finish times. The wizard starts with Monday to Friday 7:00 to 20:00, Saturday 8:00 to 17:00 and Sunday closed.
- In Days the school is closed (optional), type one date per line, then a note, for example "2026-12-25 Christmas Day". Nothing can be booked on those days.
- Click Save and continue.

Step 8: Online booking
These settings are also under Driving school → Settings → Lessons.
- Take bookings online starts on. Off: the booking form says to call or email you instead.
- Confirm online bookings straight away starts off. Off (recommended): each online booking is a request you confirm or decline under Driving school → Lessons, and the time is held meanwhile. On: the lesson is confirmed as soon as it's booked.
- Notice needed (hours): how soon someone can book (it starts at 24, so nothing sooner than a day from now).
- Book up to (weeks ahead): how far ahead learners can book (it starts at 8).
- Offer start times every (minutes): 10 offers 9:00, 9:10, 9:20 and so on, so a lesson can start as soon as the instructor arrives.
- Gap after every lesson (minutes): a short break or the drive back. Each instructor can add their own gap.
- Learners can move or cancel online until (hours before): after that, the link in their email asks them to call you (it starts at 48).
- Cancellation policy (optional): the wording learners see. It starts with "Free to move or cancel up to 48 hours before. Lessons cancelled later, or missed, are charged in full (block hours are used)."
- Click Save and continue.

Step 9: Starter content
This is where the wizard builds your website. Each switch adds one kind of ready-made content. Switch on the ones you want, then click Save and continue. Running this step again never makes copies.

| Switch | Starts | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Sample photos | On | 22 stock photos of lessons, cars, roads and portraits, from Pexels (free to use). They go into the media library and onto the starter pages, and a Photo credits page names each photographer. |
| Starter pages and menu | On | Home, Instructors, Lessons and prices, Book a lesson, Areas we cover, Pass stories, Theory test, Learner account, Ask us and Contact, with the main menu. Home is set as the front page. Pages you already have are left alone. |
| Theory test resources | On | Short guides in plain words (how the theory test works, hazard perception, a checklist before the practical test) and links to the official GOV.UK pages: booking the test, the Highway Code, traffic signs and the "show me, tell me" questions. Edit them freely. |
| Sample areas, instructors, packages and a pass story | Off | Examples so the pages don't look empty while you add your own. They're all named "Sample …". |
| Legal pages (drafts) | On | Terms and conditions, a privacy policy and a cookie policy, filled in with your details and saved as drafts for you to check before publishing. Add the law that applies under Driving school → Settings → Privacy first. |
| Keep the menu at the top when scrolling | On | The header with your name and menu stays in view as visitors scroll. |
While the starter content is added
When you click Save and continue, a box appears under the switches: Adding your starter content… Please keep this page open. Each part you switched on gets a line that says working… and then done. The sample photos are added a few at a time, so their line counts up, for example Sample photos: 7 of 22.

Keep the page open. It takes a minute or two, mostly for the photos. When everything is done, the next step opens by itself. If the box turns red and says This didn't finish, click Save and continue again: the wizard carries on where it stopped and never adds anything twice.
Step 10: All done
The last screen lists what this run of the wizard did (anything an earlier run added isn't listed again), then gives you four links: See the website, Open Driving school → Today, Review all settings and Add staff and choose what they can do.

Click Finish. The wizard closes and you land on Driving school → Today.

What you have at the end
With every switch on, the wizard leaves you with:
- Your areas, instructors and lessons from steps 4 to 6.
- Pages: Home (the front page), Instructors, Lessons and prices, Book a lesson, Areas we cover, Pass stories, Theory test, Learner account, Ask us, Contact and Photo credits, all published. Terms and conditions, Privacy Policy and Cookie policy are drafts.
- Main menu: Instructors, Lessons and prices, Areas, a Learners list (Theory test, Pass stories, Learner account) and Contact, with a Book a lesson button.
- Theory test resources: seven guides and links, including How the theory test works, Book your theory test, The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs and "Show me, tell me" questions.
- Sample content:
- three areas: "Sample area: Northgate", "Sample area: Riverside" and "Sample area: Hillside"
- two instructors: "Sample Instructor: Alex Morgan" and "Sample Instructor: Sam Patel"
- three packages: "Sample package: 10 hours", "Sample package: 20 hours" and "Sample course: intensive week"
- a pass story: "Sample pass story: Jo passed first time"
- Photos: 22 sample photos in the media library, listed with their photographers on the Photo credits page.

This is the home page a visitor sees straight after the wizard:

How to remove the sample content
Every sample is named "Sample …", so it's easy to find.
- Go to Driving school → Instructors, type "Sample" in the search box and click search.
- Tick the box at the top of the list to select them all, choose Move to Trash from Bulk actions and click Apply.
- Do the same under Driving school → Areas covered, Driving school → Packages and Driving school → Pass stories.
The theory test resources aren't samples: keep and edit them.
To remove the sample photos, put your own photos on the pages first, then go to Media, search for "Pexels", select the sample photos and delete them permanently. Then update the Photo credits page.
